Liverpool moved temporarily top of the Premier League table on Tuesday evening with a resounding 4-0 victory over Manchester United.

Jurgen Klopp's quadruple-chasing side were simply too good for their rivals and the scoreline was a fair reflection of proceedings at Anfield.

Liverpool raced into a 2-0 lead in the opening 45 minutes of play, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah the men grabbing the goals.

There was a miniscule fightback from United at the start of the second half, but any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished by Sadio Mane.

The in-form Senegalese forward put Liverpool 3-0 up with a marvellous finish in the 68th-minute, before Salah struck again with five minutes of normal time remaining to make it 4-0.

It really was a night which further highlighted the enormous gulf in class between the northern rivals.

Due to the fact they were made to look bang average at best once again, a few United players lost their cool towards the end of the match - including Bruno Fernandes.

The Portuguese midfielder was guilty of a horrendous knee-high tackle on Trent Alexander-Arnold and was lucky to escape with only a yellow card.

Liverpool players were understandably furious with Fernandes' actions, particularly club captain Jordan Henderson.

As the referee was booking the United man, Henderson stormed over to confront his opponent and appeared to call him a "f***ing rat" and a "f***ing baby".

Fan reaction

Henderson was absolutely raging and looked as if he unleashed a verbal tirade in Fernandes' direction, which unsurprisingly went down rather well with Liverpool fans.

After the game, Fernandes was interviewed by Sky Sports and he made sure to apologise to the suffering United supporters for the team's latest lacklustre display.

"It is a bad result once again, there's not much that I can say," Fernandes said. "I apologise to the fans. That will never be enough. It is what we can do now. They do not deserve us playing in this way, they deserve much more from us. The way they support us to the end, the way they stay after the whistle to applaud us.

"They deserve much more from us and we know we need to raise the standard, much higher. It is what it is."

United and Fernandes will now have to try and regroup for their trip to Arsenal on Saturday afternoon, a game which could bring an end to their hopes of finishing in the Premier League's top four.
