Manchester United's interim manager, Ralf Rangnick, admitted that his club are "six years" behind Liverpool following their 4-0 defeat at Anfield.

Following the hammering on Tuesday night, even Rangnick couldn't deny there's a chasm between the two sides right now.

“It’s embarrassing, it’s completely disappointing and also humiliating, but we’ve got to accept that they’re six years ahead of us," Rangnick said on beINSPORTS.

"When you compare that squad that Liverpool has with the one that Jurgen inherited when he came six years ago I think at the end of his first season they finished eighth.

"They had a point average of 1.6. This is roughly where we are right now with our current team so this team needs to be rebuilt. It's clear and a game like today showed that even in a very drastic way that this rebuild is necessary."

But does Rangnick really think United will be on Liverpool's level in six years' time?

Well, not if they continue to waste money in the transfer market.

And just how much money they've wasted in the last decade is clear for all to see in a graphic, made by 90min, recently posted on Reddit.

The graphic shows the net spend of clubs in Europe's top five leagues over the last 10 years (since 2012/13).

At the top of that ranking is Manchester United having a net spend of more than €1 billion.

Wow.

In that time, United have won one Premier League, one FA Cup, one League Cup and a Europa League. That's simply not good enough.

That's even more than rivals Manchester City, who are in second place while Paris Saint-Germain are in third.

Barcelona and Arsenal make up the top five.

Elsewhere, it doesn't make good reading for relegation-threatened Everton, who are in eighth having a net spend of more than €400m. Aston Villa are just below them in ninth.

Meanwhile, a juxtaposition between Man Utd and Liverpool shows the quadruple-chasers are down in 14th with a net spend of €347 million.

There are plenty of Premier League clubs making up the top 25, with Real Madrid perhaps surprisingly down in 25th - below the likes of Leeds, Wolves, Brighton, Leicester, Crystal Palace and Newcastle.
