Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster is 'in a strong position' to earn himself a new St Mary's contract after a string of impressive performances, according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

Forster has gone on to establish himself as Saints' first-choice custodian in recent months, but question marks remain as to whether he will still be on the south coast club's books by the time next season gets underway.

What's the latest news involving Forster?

Forster is currently Southampton's second-highest earner, with only Theo Walcott raking in more than £70,000-per-week.

Although that lucrative agreement is nearing its end as Forster's contract expires in the summer, it appears remaining at St Mary's is a possibility.

Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has revealed Forster has made 'a very good argument' to be offered fresh terms thanks to his fine form of late and it appears the Austrian is now keen to keep the 6 ft 7 ace at the club.

The development comes after Hasenhuttl insisted earlier in the season that his intention was to allow Forster or fellow goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to depart at the season’s climax but tie the other down to a new deal.

Saints were reportedly close to agreeing a new deal with McCarthy in November, heightening the prospect of Forster heading through the St Mary’s exit door, but his long-term injury could prove costly.

What has Tom Barclay said about Forster?

Barclay believes Forster's recent displays have caught the eye of Hasenhuttl and could result in him signing on the dotted line to extend his stay at Southampton.

However, the journalist is unsure as to whether Saints have already headed to the negotiating table with Forster and his representatives.

Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: "I think he's put himself in a really good position. It's quite a turnaround given the situation he was in earlier this season. He was very much expected to leave given he is on big wages.

"He has definitely put himself in a strong position. I don't think talks have begun yet on that front, so it's not a done deal so to speak, but it could be quite likely that he will be given a new contract now."

Does Forster deserve a new contract?

Forster made his 160th Saints appearance when Hasenhuttl's charges made the short journey to take on Brighton & Hove Albion today.

The six-cap England international showed his pedigree in last weekend's 1-0 win over Arsenal as he made a string of impressive saves to keep the Gunners at bay.

Forster earned praise from Hasenhuttl and, having featured in every Premier League fixture since overcoming West Ham United on Boxing Day, he has shown he still has a lot to offer at the age of 34.
