Rangers are keeping tabs on Sunderland's Ross Stewart as a potential replacement for Alfredo Morelos this summer, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The 70-goal striker has been one of the standout players in League One this season and has therefore been linked with a move to Ibrox.

What's the latest news involving Stewart?

According to the Northern Echo, Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side are in a three-way race with Norwich and Swansea to sign the Sunderland striker when the window reopens for business.

However, Stewart's future at the Stadium of Light could hinge on whether the Black Cats get promoted to the Championship, with Alex Neil's men still chasing a top six place heading into their final few fixtures.

Stewart's stock has risen this season, with the striker scoring more than 20 goals in League One, the third-most in the division, which has helped Sunderland remain in touch with the play offs.

His impressive form saw him rewarded with his first call-up to the Scotland squad for their friendlies with Austria and Poland last month, although he wasn't fortunate enough to make his international debut.

What did O'Rourke say about Stewart?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "He has been nicknamed the Loch Ness Drogba by the Sunderland fans, which is a good nickname.

"He can only do what he can do, and he's scoring goals for Sunderland right now. If they don't win promotion this season, then they're going to face a real battle to keep hold of him.

"I'm sure he is somebody Rangers have been keeping tabs on, in case they do lose Morelos this summer."

Should Stewart swap Sunderland for Rangers?

Stewart, who was described as "exceptional" by ex-Scotland forward James McFadden, might be enjoying the best goalscoring season of his career, but even if the best case scenario does happen and Sunderland get promoted, then Rangers is still surely a more attractive proposition.

Not only are the Glasgow giants likely to be challenging for major silverware, but if they win the Europa League or navigate their way through the qualifiers providing they don't, Rangers would be able to offer Stewart Champions League football.

Therefore, if it comes down to Stewart either staying with the Black Cats or moving north of the border, it should really be a no-brainer for the frontman.
