Tottenham are worried about their current lack of homegrown players ahead of their potential return to Europe next season, according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

The Premier League and UEFA have different rules when it comes to determining who is a homegrown player, which could cause a problem for Spurs in the coming months.

What's Tottenham's current situation regarding homegrown players?

Tottenham appear to be almost certain to be competing in Europe in 2022/23, and they may even return to the Champions League for the first time since the 2019/20 season.

However, as confirmed by The Telegraph, UEFA only allows 17 foreign players to be named on a team's squad list for European competitions, and Eric Dier, Ben Davies, Joe Rodon and Matt Doherty are all considered overseas players, according to their rules.

This means that Tottenham look to be short on homegrown players right now, especially with the likes of Giovani Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele and Bryan Gil set to return from their respective loan spells at the end of the season.

What has Bridge said about this issue for Tottenham?

Bridge has revealed that Tottenham are not happy with the current predicament they find themselves in.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: “Tottenham are concerned about the homegrown situation, because in Europe, Eric Dier and Ben Davies are non-homegrown. It’s crazy, because Eric Dier trained in Portugal.”

Will Conte now be forced to compromise on his transfer targets for this summer?

Tottenham were not particularly busy in the transfer window, but Antonio Conte did manage to add Juventus duo Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur to his squad, and both have started very well in north London.

He may have hoped to tap into the European market again this summer, but he may now have to alter his plans to ensure that the club have enough homegrown talent on their books.

This could mean that the likes of Djed Spence and Sam Johnstone are targeted to help Tottenham achieve their homegrown quota. Indeed, Bridge has suggested himself that Tottenham will look to sign a homegrown right wing-back this summer.

This could be somewhat of a disappointment to Conte, who may have wanted to bring in some bigger names to bolster his side.

However, it has been reported that he wants to add six players in the off-season, and if Conte can find the right blend between homegrown and overseas players, the summer window could still be a positive one for Spurs.
