Newcastle United are getting the right message out by warning other clubs that they do not have an unlimited budget to spend this summer, claims Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

While the Magpies are now the richest team in the world after being taken over by PIF, Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers, reports suggest that they will not go crazy in the upcoming transfer window.

What is the latest news involving Newcastle's summer budget?

The Telegraph reported last month that Eddie Howe is likely to have a transfer kitty of less than £90m.

It is roughly the same amount the Tyneside outfit spent in the January window after they brought in the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Chris Wood.

Newcastle signed Guimaraes from Lyon in a deal worth £41.6m in total, but that kind of transfer could be a one off for the time being if the above is to be believed.

Nevertheless, based on the success of their January signings, Newcastle supporters still have reason to be excited going into the upcoming window.

What has Downie said about Newcastle's summer budget?

Downie thinks Newcastle have played their cards right by briefing that they will not be spending silly money this summer.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the Sky Sports journalist said: "I think it's important for the owners to get the message out there, that they're not going to be held to ransom, that they don't have hundreds of millions to spend, and I think it's clever of them to try and get that message out there."

Do Newcastle need to spend more than £90m?

It depends what their objectives are. If the aim for the 2022/23 season is to qualify for Europe, then they are quite clearly going to have to make significant additions to their squad after a campaign of fighting against relegation.

However, if Newcastle's owners are happy to remain patient and slowly work towards becoming a Champions League team, then there is no need for the club to go mad in the upcoming market. And based on Staveley's words, that seems to be the plan.

"To get trophies means patience, investment, time," the Newcastle director was quoted as saying by Sky Sports last year. "We want everybody to work with us to build the club towards what it needs to be."

It will now be interesting to see if Staveley and co stick to their guns. Should an elite player become available this summer and be open to moving to St James' Park, then their resolve will truly be tested.
