A hilarious video has recently gone viral showing what is certainly one of football’s funnier moments.
The visitors came into the game off the back of five straight defeats and found themselves sitting 14th in the table with little to play for; meanwhile, the Bees occupied 18th spot, a mere three places clear of the drop zone but with a comfortable points advantage already ensuring their safety.
So, one would be forgiven for thinking that the 2,202 attendees would be treated to an unentertaining display of British non-league football, although, what they actually got was quite the opposite.
Aside from the 3-1 victory for Southend, that also saw Barnet miss a crucial penalty, spectators were treated to one of the most laughable moments we’ve seen this football season.
After the Shrimpers had opened the scoring in just the fifth minute they were granted an opportunity on a silver platter to double their advantage.
A simple clearance from a Barnet corner left the ball there to be won, as two defenders and a Southend attacker contested for control.
All an equal distance away, it seemed like any of the three players could have come out with the ball, up until the point that the two defenders went steaming into the challenge and absolutely clattered each other.
A cheeky little side step from the wise Southend forward had completely done Barnet’s defenders and left him and his teammate Scot-free to charge through on goal.
Easy stuff! But, oh wait… he still had to finish.
Two-on-one with the goalkeeper, fans of the visitors were screaming at him to pass it for the infamous ‘sweaty goal’, but to their horror, the forward instead decided to take the shot on himself and scuffed the strike about eight yards wide of the post.
Home fans jeered abuse, as the teammate who had sprinted the length of the pitch for what he thought was a certified tap-in threw his hands up in frustration.
The same video also went viral on Twitter and fans have been having their say on the hilarious series of events that unfolded in the Vanarama National League encounter.
