Crystal Palace could sign Peterborough United ace Ronnie Edwards 'if the price is right' despite not currently listing him as a 'major target', according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

Patrick Vieira splashed the cash to add exciting youngsters such as Michael Olise and Marc Guehi to the squad he inherited from Roy Hodgson last summer and it appears he could be tempted to welcome Edwards to Selhurst Park ahead of next season.

What's the latest news involving Edwards?

According to The Mail on Sunday, Vieira is already planning for the next stage of his squad's rebuild and is plotting a big-money move for Peterborough's Edwards.

The report suggests Palace are not the only Premier League side looking to secure the six-cap England under-19 international's services as Tottenham Hotspur are also mulling over whether to test his current employers' resolve, with £15million understood to be his valuation.

Despite only being 19, Edwards has still managed to establish himself as a regular member of Posh's starting line-up this season.

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry has claimed that Edwards is a 'certainty to have an outstanding career' and also revealed Posh beat Tottenham and Brentford to his signing last summer, with the latter even complaining to the Football Association after being upset over failing to strike a deal.

The central defender's Peterborough contract is not due to expire until the summer of 2025, meaning the Championship side are in a strong position if Palace or other suitors look to head to the negotiating table.

What has Tom Barclay said about Edwards?

Barclay understands that Edwards is not at the top of Vieira's shortlist of targets heading into the summer transfer window.

However, the journalist has refused to rule out the possibility of Edwards heading to Selhurst Park.

He still believes Palace have their eye on the teenager and could be interested in sealing the deal if they can agree on a fee with Peterborough.

Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: "I don't think he is a major target, but it is one to watch. If the price is right, a deal could possibly be done."

Why is Edwards of interest to Palace?

Vieira may currently have Guehi, Joachim Andersen, James Tomkins, Nathan Ferguson and Jaroslaw Jach as options at the heart of Palace's defence, but two of them are set to leave in the summer.

That is because Tomkins and Jach's respective contracts are due to expire at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Ferguson has only enjoyed eight minutes of action since his move from West Bromwich Albion close to two years ago, with injuries blighting his Selhurst Park career.

It means Vieira is likely to target at least one central defensive arrival during the upcoming transfer window.
