Newcastle United's move for Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller has hit a "dead end", according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The 32-year-old was thought to be a target for the Magpies but now looks close to signing a new contract at his current club.

What is the latest news involving Muller?

According to Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg, Muller is set to put pen to paper on a new deal until 2025 and an announcement is imminent.

This comes after Christian Falk claimed that both Newcastle and Everton were interested in signing the German forward.

Muller's current contract is set to expire next year, so the likes of Newcastle and Everton probably felt that they could pick up an elite player for a ridiculously low price.

However, the Bayern man leaving Germany this summer now looks to be off the table in a blow to the Premier League duo.

What has Jones said about Muller and Newcastle?

Jones has told GIVEMESPORT that Newcastle have moved on to other targets after being informed that Muller will be signing a contract extension at the Allianz Arena.

Speaking to GMS, the football journalist said: "I'm told Newcastle have been informed that Thomas Muller will be signing an extension with Bayern, so they will be moving on from their interest in him.

"They were intrigued by the potential of a player of his quality and experience becoming available but will now look elsewhere, as this one has hit a dead end."

Would Muller have been a good signing for Newcastle?

Without a doubt. Muller has been one of the best attackers in world football for over a decade now.

His goal record is phenomenal, with the 112-cap Germany international scoring 226 times in total for Bayern, while his assist numbers are also impressive.

He can play behind the striker, as the actual No.9 and on the right flank, and he is a serial winner having picked up World Cup and Champions League medals.

With where Newcastle are trying to go following their takeover, Muller would have been the perfect signing for them. And again, he probably would not have cost too much money given his contract situation.

Eddie Howe and his superiors, however, are going to have to move on and focus on other targets like Brentford's Ivan Toney and Reims youngster Hugo Ekitike, who the Magpies continue to be strongly linked with.
