Southampton still want 'outstanding' 6 ft 3 star at St Mary's

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl

Southampton remain keen to sign West Bromwich Albion ace Sam Johnstone but are also ‘looking at other targets’ in case they fail to lure the goalkeeper to St Mary’s, according to The Sun journalist Tom Barclay.

Johnstone’s £18,000-per-week contract is set to expire in the summer, meaning he will leave West Brom for nothing, but Southampton are facing stiff competition for his services.

What’s the latest news involving Johnstone?

It is understood that Southampton are battling it out with the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur for Johnstone ahead of him becoming a free agent.

The 29-year-old has been on Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl’s radar for a prolonged period of time, with his interest also coming to the surface last November.

Everton are another Premier League club known to be keen on acquiring Johnstone, but it seems as though the shot-stopper has already decided on where his next destination will be.

That is because the three-cap England international has reportedly told those close to him that he wants to join Tottenham.

Widespread interest in Johnstone should come as little surprise, with former England international Glenn Hoddle previously describing his performances for West Brom as ‘outstanding’.

What has Tom Barclay said about Johnstone?

Despite Southampton’s continued pursuit, Barclay believes Johnstone is destined to join Tottenham at the end of the season.

The journalist understands Hasenhuttl has already made plans in case Saints fail to persuade the 6’3 star to head to St Mary’s.

Barclay told GIVEMESPORT: “I wouldn’t say their interest has cooled, but they are just waiting to see what Johnstone’s answer is.

“I think Tottenham are most likely to sign him, but it’s down to the player and Southampton have still got their hat in the ring.

“They haven’t given up on that one, but I do know they are looking at other targets as well.”

Why are Southampton looking to sign a new goalkeeper?

Hasenhuttl currently has four goalkeepers – in the form of Fraser Forster, Alex McCarthy, Willy Caballero and Harry Lewis – at his disposal.

However, as it stands, the quartet are set to leave St Mary’s at the end of the season as their respective contracts are due to expire.

Hasenhuttl has revealed Forster has made ‘a very good argument’ to be offered fresh terms after a string of impressive performances between the sticks.

It comes after the Southampton chief insisted earlier in the campaign that his intention was to allow Forster or McCarthy to depart at the season’s climax but tie the other down to a new deal.

Even if that proves to be the case, Saints could be left with a lack of goalkeeping options heading into next term unless Hasenhuttl makes use of the transfer window.
