“It went so quick when the ball the came and I thought: ‘If I am going to touch it, the defender might come and press me and if I hit it one-touch, it’s just hope for the best.’

“I did against Germany [for Netherlands recently], so maybe that’s why it was in my head.

“But when I hit it, I thought, ‘Never again!’ and looked back to the defence. But then I turned round to their goal and saw the ball bounce on the crossbar.

“It was a crazy moment. It’s not an assist, but if you guys register it, obviously I’ll take it. I don’t even know what I did, but I just remember sprinting back so we were ready for the [Everton] break.

“It was a fantastic feeling to lead the boys out in such a big game and to get the win in the dying seconds is something sweet and special.”
