Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe is unlikely to be given the opportunity to spend big when he looks to bolster his St James' Park squad in the upcoming summer transfer window, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

Howe was appointed as the Magpies' boss last November and, having taken over a side embroiled in a relegation battle, an upturn in results has seen them climb into the Premier League's top 10.

What's the latest news involving Newcastle transfer plans?

The Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund led a £305million takeover of Newcastle a month before Howe's appointment, resulting in the Magpies becoming the richest club in world football.

It appears as though Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Keylor Navas, Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile and Bayer Leverkusen winger Moussa Diaby are firmly on the Tyneside giants' radar heading into the summer.

While Badiashile would bolster Newcastle's backline, Italian media outlet Tuttomercato have revealed Howe has also revived his interest in Torino centre-half Gleison Bremer, who has attracted additional admirers in Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Meanwhile, Manchester United are understood to have placed a £40million price tag on goalkeeper Dean Henderson, with Newcastle making it clear to the Red Devils that they will look to prise him away from Old Trafford.

The Magpies are facing competition from Manchester City as they aim to acquire teenage Rangers attacking midfielder Alex Lowry.

What has Keith Downie said about Newcastle's budget?

Downie believes the Newcastle hierarchy will be shrewd in the upcoming transfer window and look to boost Howe's budget by selling current stars.

While The Telegraph have claimed the Magpies' transfer budget will be £90million for the summer, Downie expects the Tynesiders could target spending even less than that figure.

The Sky Sports reporter told GIVEMESPORT: "I think their plan is to run it like a business and I think their plan will be to keep costs as low as they can.

"I very much doubt they will manage to keep it to £50million, but I do think what they'll try and do is bring money in, in terms of player sales as well."

Who did Newcastle spend their money on in January?

Newcastle were Europe's biggest spenders during the winter window, with the spending spree getting underway by forking out £12million on Kieran Trippier.

Chris Wood's £25million release clause was then triggered to seal his arrival from Burnley, while Newcastle had to part with £40million to acquire Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon.

The Magpies' January business concluded with Matt Targett joining on loan from Aston Villa and Dan Burn swapping Brighton & Hove Albion for St James' Park after a £13million deal had been struck.
