Everton are adamant they should have been awarded a penalty against Liverpool in Sunday's Merseyside derby.

In the second half with the scores still 0-0, Anthony Gordon went down under Joel Matip's challenge inside the penalty area.

Referee Stuart Attwell, who had previously booked Gordon for diving, waved away the strong appeals. The decision was checked by VAR but the on-field decision stood.

Everton have now asked the referees' boss Mike Riley to explain the decision.

After the match, Everton boss Frank Lampard claimed you don't get those kind of decisions at Anfield.

"It is a penalty in the second half,” he said. “I don’t think you get them here. I think probably if that is Mo Salah at the other end, you get a penalty. And I'm not trying to create conflict there, I think it is just the reality of football sometimes.

“It was a foul, it was a clear foul. But you don't get them here.”

He's wrong, though.

Teams do get those decisions at Anfield. In fact, Everton themselves get those decisions at Anfield.

Last season, they were awarded a controversial spot-kick as Dominic Calvert-Lewin went down after tripping over Trent Alexander-Arnold who was on the floor.

But we want to remember another penalty award involving Calvert-Lewin at the same end in the same fixture.

Calvert-Lewin went down under minimal contact from behind from Dejan Lovren.

Referee Craig Pawson pointed to the penalty spot and Wayne Rooney made no mistake to earn Everton a 1-1 draw.

It was a very soft decision and Jurgen Klopp was absolutely fuming in his post-match interview on Sky Sports.

"Calvert-Lewin is smart and takes a step but even then it's nothing," said an angry Klopp.

"The referees don't understand that the player is doing that.

"I cannot believe in a game like this when only one team is trying to win it and the other team were never in our box, and then you give it, you open the door for them like this.

"In my understanding, it's not a penalty."

Klopp then clashed with Pat Davison: "We can stop the interview because I only want to speak with someone who has a little bit of understanding of football" after the reporter revealed he thought it was a penalty.

Klopp: "If you think it's a penalty then do it, say it. It's a penalty in your opinion? Is it a penalty in your opinion? Is it a penalty in your opinion?"

Davison: "Okay. If you want my opinion. My opinion doesn't matter. I would say soft."

Klopp: "Obviously my opinion doesn't matter as well."

Davison: "Of course your opinion matters."

Klopp: "Does it change anything?"

Davison: "No, but we're conducting an interview."

Klopp: "Then tell me. Is it a penalty or not?"

Davison: "I think it's soft but I do think it's a penalty."

"Well, then we can stop the interview because I only want to talk to people who have a little bit of understanding about football. I'm sorry. I'm really. I cannot believe.

Davison: "I know you're angry, but there are people who've played a lot of football matches in our studio who also think it's a penalty."

Klopp: "Oh. Then I'm sorry. I'm wrong. You are all right. Yeah."

Davison: "I didn't say that."

Klopp: "Yes, that's what you said. That other people are right and I am wrong. I must be wrong, right?"

Davison: "No, just because.... isn't it a game of opinions?"

Klopp: "We've been here five minutes now. Obviously I am not in the mood to answer your questions. And you don't have better questions do you?"

Davison: "I've got one more. I don't think you're going to like it. Six changes today, you also took Salah off at 1-0 up. Do you think those changes had any effect on the result?"

Klopp: "That's my job. I make decisions before I know they are right. And afterwards it's your job to say I'm not right. I've got no problem with that, I was sure it was the right decision.

"We brought Roberto Firmino on for Mo Salah, we could have scored before, we could have scored afterwards. We could have scored all the time. We lived, more or less, in their box. And obviously we didn't do it.

"But I have to take that. I have no problem with that. I only think that we pressed so much like we did today, in a game like this, where they didn't even have counter attacks, then it's quite difficult if you have one situation, but there was one situation and everyone was waiting for it...

"There are bigger catastrophes on this planet than a point after a game like this, but it feels not too good.

"Sorry for all the rest I said before."

Davison: "Thanks for your time."
