Everton are demanding a full explanation from the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after being denied a penalty during Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.According to The Telegraph, Everton are ‘livid’ that Liverpool defender Joel Matip was not penalised for his challenge on Anthony Gordon in the second half.Gordon, who was booked for diving in the first half, went down inside the Liverpool box in the 53rd minute. The score was still 0-0 this point and Everton could have taken the lead had referee Stuart Attwell pointed to the spot. But the match official waved play on, much to the Toffees’ fury.Watch the incident here:

The Independent claim that Everton are more aggrieved with the VAR, Darren England, who they believe dismissed the incident too quickly without checking it properly.

What did Frank Lampard say about the Anthony Gordon incident?

After the match, Everton manager Frank Lampard told Sky Sports: "It was a penalty in the second half. I don't think you get them here. I think if that is Mo Salah at the other end, he gets the penalty.

"I am not trying to create conflict there, I just think it is the reality of football sometimes. Maybe I have played for clubs sometimes at the top reaches of the league, with the crowd behind them, you get more than you don't.

"The second one on Anthony is a foul. It is a clear foul. But you don't get them here."

Jamie Carragher: It was a stonewall penalty

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher described it as a “stonewall penalty” but can understand why Attwell failed to away Gordon the spot-kick following the first-half incident.

"He's got to be careful Anthony Gordon, he's a local player and I know some of his friends and family," Carragher said. "He's a great player and lad, one of the best on the pitch today.

"He caused Liverpool massive problems, it's not the first one in the first half, he's just got to be careful of that. It'll definitely be in referees' heads and maybe he hasn't got what he's deserved because of a few incidents in three or four other games. But that said, it's a stonewall penalty."

Everton in danger of relegation

Lampard recently received a personal apology from referees’ chief Mike Riley after a handball by Manchester City midfielder Rodri during a 1-0 defeat for Everton went unpunished at Goodison Park in late February.

But apologies will count for nothing if Everton, who went on to concede goals to Andy Robertson and Divock Origi at Anfield, end up losing their Premier League status next month.

Lampard’s side are currently 18th in the Premier league table, two points from safety, with six fixtures remaining.
