Tottenham: £70m duo will 'have an effect' on Conte's transfer plans

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer transfer budget will be affected by the permanent signings of loan stars Cristian Romero and Dejan Kulusevski, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The capital club brought in the two talented youngsters on loan deals with an obligation to buy last August and January, respectively, meaning they will have to cough up substantial fees ahead of next season.

What is the latest news involving Tottenham?

According to The Guardian, Tottenham brought in defender Romero from Atalanta on a season-long loan with the option to make his stay permanent for €55 million (£46.7m).

However, Spurs manager Antonio Conte revealed it was an obligation to buy, and that they had already moved to enact that clause in the Argentina international’s deal.

“We have an obligation to buy…we bought him,” Conte said, confirming the centre-back is set to remain at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, Kulusevski joined on an 18-month loan deal in the winter that cost Spurs £8.3m, £2.5m this season and £5.8m next term.

Sky Sports claim that there is an obligation to buy the Sweden international for £29.2m if certain sporting criteria are met, while the Evening Standard have revealed the north London outfit have already decided to do so.

What has O’Rourke said about Tottenham?

With Tottenham already committing between £70m and £75.9m of their transfer budget for Romero and Kulusevski, depending on certain clauses, their spending power could be limited next term.

But O’Rourke believes the club’s hierarchy will have taken that ‘into consideration’ ahead of making those signings.

He told GiveMeSport: “It’ll probably have an effect on the summer transfer kitty; there’s no doubt about that. But I’m sure Spurs took that into consideration when they did sign Romero on that loan deal in the summer and then obviously Kulusevski in January on a loan deal as well.”

Have Romero and Kulusevski been good signings?

Kulusevski has made an extremely fast start to his Spurs career, registering three goals and six assists in 15 appearances.

As per WhoScored, the powerful winger has been Tottenham’s third-best performer this campaign, achieving a season rating of 7.15.

And Romero has arguably been just as impressive. As per FBref, the South American has ranked in the 99th percentage for tackles, 96th for pressures and 84th for interceptions amongst players in his position over the last year.

Therefore, it’s little surprise that Conte is keen to tie both players down to permanent deals, and they could aid his ongoing revolution at the club.
