Arsenal took a major step towards qualification for next season's Champions League after their 3-1 victory over Manchester United on Saturday - and noted Gunners fan Piers Morgan wants to see Cristiano Ronaldo lining up for the club if they are successful.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner was on the scoresheet for United at the Emirates over the weekend, but his first-half strike proved only a consolation as Ralf Rangnick's men saw their own top four hopes crumble in north London.

Media personality Morgan enjoys a well-publicised friendship with Ronaldo and admitted during an appearance with talkSPORT on Monday that he believes the Portuguese superstar isn't getting the respect he deserves at Old Trafford.

"Do you know what I'd do if I was Arsenal manager? I'd go in, get Cristiano Ronaldo and put him upfront. I've had this conversation with him last week. I said 'come to Arsenal'.

"The Arsenal and Manchester United thing is very interesting. On paper, United have far more talented players and far more experienced, talented players but they don't have the right attitude.

"The mental attitude is shocking. Whatever is going on in that club…if they didn't have Ronaldo in the team they wouldn't be winning."

Morgan went on to insist that Ronaldo would be far more appreciated within the Arsenal set-up and backed him to improve the club's already impressive crop of young players.

"Arsenal have young, hungry, really promising guys who have a great attitude. People like [Bukayo] Saka, [Emile] Smith Rowe, [Kieran] Tierney and all of these guys. That's what's encouraging. If you combined the United talent with our mentality then both clubs would be sorted.

"I'm not even joking. I'd love to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to Arsenal. If he's not going to stay at United, I'd take him in a heartbeat. I watched that game at the weekend and he was the best player on the pitch."

Having only returned to United from Juventus in September, Ronaldo still has more than a year left to run on this current contract at Old Trafford.

That said, it remains to be seen how heavily the 37-year-old will feature in the plans of incoming manager Erik ten Hag at United next season.

Ronaldo may not be quite the player he was in his prime, but he is still the third-highest scorer in the Premier League this season - with 16 goals to his credit.

No Arsenal player can come close to those numbers in a season where the Gunners have struggled to regularly find the back of the net.

If Ronaldo does decide to call time on his second spell at the 'Theatre of Dreams', then a switch to Arsenal might not be quite as far-fetched as it may have appeared a few months ago.

If nothing else, it would certainly make Piers a very happy man.
