Aston Villa could pull off some ‘brilliant, brilliant business’ by signing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez, according to journalist Josh Holland.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move away from Anfield in recent months after finding game time hard to come by and could make the swich to Villa Park.

What is the latest news involving Gomez?

According to The Mirror, Villa manager Steven Gerrard has outlined three key areas for improvement ahead of next season, with a new centre-back, a commanding midfielder and a top-class striker at the top of his wish list.

It’s believed that the 41-year-old tactician is set to test his former side’s resolve by attempting to snap up Gomez, who is valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, on a permanent deal.

The 11-cap England international established himself as one of the Premier League’s most promising young defenders after featuring 28 times in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign.

However, a serious knee injury limited Gomez to just six top-flight starts last term, and he’s been unable to force his way back into Jurgen Klopp’s starting XI this time around.

With Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and summer-signing Ibrahima Konate currently ahead of him in the pecking order, Gomez has been awarded just 235 minutes of action in the Premier League throughout 2021/22.

What has Holland said about Gomez?

Villa have also been credited with an interest in Borussia Monchengladbach central defender Matthias Ginter, and Holland believes they’re ‘both quality’ players.

He told GiveMeSport: “I think they're both quality centre-backs. I think Gomez, in particular, the whole Liverpool and Gerrard connection is pretty interesting.

“I think Gomez is good enough to start in a Premier League side, and obviously, he doesn't do that at Liverpool because of the world-class players above him. So, bringing him to Villa Park would be brilliant, brilliant business.”

What is Villa’s current centre-back situation?

Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa are the current first-choice pairing in the heart of defence for Villa, but doubts have surfaced over the duo’s future in the Midlands.

Football Insider claim that Arsenal are interested in bringing Konsa in as another senior option at centre-back to complement Mikel Arteta’s current choices.

Meanwhile, Mings was linked to Newcastle United prior to the January window, and Gerrard has recently raised doubts over his long-term suitability as the club captain.

Gomez could, therefore, be viewed as an upgrade on the players available to Gerrard at present, and Villa may well be able to pull off a shock deal this summer.
