Cristiano Ronaldo has enjoyed yet another brilliant season in 2021/22.

Despite the fact it's been a bit of a horror show at Manchester United overall, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has racked up some seriously impressive numbers.

In Premier League action, Ronaldo has netted 16 goals in 27 appearances, which makes him the third-highest scorer in the division behind Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Tottenham Hotspur's Heung-min Son.

He's also averaging a goal contribution every 115 minutes, which is simply not normal for a 37-year-old.

But Ronaldo's carry job at Old Trafford in 2021/22 has not been enough to earn him a place in FourFourTwo's list of the 10 best European players in the sport right now.

Let's take a look at who they've selected instead...

6. Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool)

5. Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund)

4. Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)

3. Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain)

In our opinion, that's a very solid list overall. Ronaldo could perhaps have been included at the expense of either Muller or Dias, but they've both been brilliant in recent years at their respective clubs as well.

The role of the 'golden oldie' is filled by Modric, who's dropped a plethora of ageless masterclasses in the Champions League with Real Madrid this season.

Benzema's place at the top of the list is more than deserved and at this point in time, it's safe to say the French goal machine is the big favourite to win the 2022 Ballon d'Or.
