Tottenham Hotspur would pull off a 'great signing' if head coach Antonio Conte and managing director Fabio Paratici succeed in luring Villarreal's Pau Torres to north London, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Conte was appointed as Spurs' head coach last November and, ahead of his first full campaign at Hotspur Way, it appears he has already started to identify stars who could potentially join the Premier League side in the summer.

What's the latest news involving Torres?

According to The Athletic, Conte has made welcoming a left-sided central defender to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium his top priority leading into the summer transfer window.

Although Josko Gvardiol, Alessandro Bastoni, Sven Botman and Nico Schlotterbeck have been listed as those to have worked their way onto the Italian's radar, it appears the 6'3 Torres is also a potential acquisition.

That is because Football Insider have revealed Tottenham are keeping tabs on the 25-year-old after initially mulling over making a move last year.

The report suggests Conte is a huge admirer of Torres and sees the 17-cap Spain international as one of the best centre-backs in Europe.

Torres has been a regular starter for hometown club Villarreal this season, with five goals also stressing that he can be a threat in the opposition's penalty area while being a defensive rock at the other end of the pitch.

What has Pete O'Rourke said about Torres?

O'Rourke believes Torres, who has been described as 'sensational', would be an eye-catching Spurs arrival and prising him away from Villarreal would show they mean business.

However, the journalist warns Tottenham will have to work hard in order to win the race for the Spaniard's signature.

O'Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: "I think he would be a great signing for Spurs because it is a left-sided centre-back that they're looking for.

"But I think there will be a lot of clubs in for him as well, so interest will be quite high."

Who else has Torres been linked with?

According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are another side looking to tempt Torres to the Premier League.

The report suggests the centre-half is open to offers which would take him away from La Liga, while Torres also has a release clause worth in the region of £50.5million written into his Villarreal contract.

There is also a possibility that Torres could remain with his current employers beyond the end of the transfer window as his deal, worth £63,000-per-week, still has more than two years to run.
