Newcastle United could move on from Manchester United attacking midfielder Jesse Lingard in the summer transfer window, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie.

The Magpies attempted to prise the 29-year-old away from Old Trafford in January but were unwilling to match the financial demands made by Ralf Rangnick’s charges.

What is the latest news involving Lingard?

According to the Daily Mail, the Red Devils insisted on receiving a £12 million ‘survival bonus’ for Lingard if Newcastle managed to avoid relegation this season.

It is understood the club's new Saudi Arabian owners baulked at the figure which was in addition to a £2.5m loan fee and the player's £100,000-per-week wages.

Instead, Newcastle brought in the likes of Bruno Guimarães, Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier as manager Eddie Howe added significant strength to his first-team squad.

And the winter acquisitions have proved to be astute signings as the St. James’ Park outfit are now sitting pretty in the top half of the Premier League table, 14 points clear of the relegation zone.

That has not stopped several star names from being linked with moves to Newcastle, though, but it remains to be seen if they will revive their interest in Lingard.

What has Downie said about Lingard?

Lingard, who is valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, is set to become a free agent when his current United contract expires over the summer, yet Downie believes he was only a ‘short-term’ target for Howe.

He told GiveMeSport: “Jesse Lingard, I’ve got a feeling he was one of those ones for January and would be unlikely for the summer.

“I might be wrong, but I just got the feeling he was one of those kind of short-term targets until the end of the season. I just don't know if he'd be a project signing for the club. I may be wrong, but I just got the feeling he was for January.”

Where could Lingard move to?

Even if Newcastle decide not to rekindle their pursuit for Lingard, the 32-cap England international is unlikely to be short of potential suitors.

According to The Mirror, West Ham are eager to bring the versatile star back to the London Stadium ahead of next season, while three Serie A clubs are expected to rival them for his signature.

AC Milan, Juventus and AS Roma are also believed to be keeping close tabs of Lingard’s situation in what could be a crucial summer for the player.
