Wolverhampton Wanderers ‘would love to keep’ both Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves at the club beyond the current campaign, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Midlands outfit are in danger of losing the Portuguese duo as well as fellow midfielder Leander Dendoncker when the summer transfer window reopens in just a few months’ time.

What is the latest news involving Wolves?

According to The Athletic, both Moutinho and Neves could depart Molineux ahead of next season, after several successful years in the club’s engine room.

Moutinho, who has racked up 171 appearances for Wolves in all competitions, is set to become a free agent at the end of June, and while talks are continuing over fresh terms, his time at the club may be drawing to a close.

And according to The Sun, European giants Manchester United, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are all closely monitoring Neves’ situation, while Barcelona have also been listed as potential suitors.

The 25-year-old still has just over two years remaining on his existing deal, but it’s claimed that the Wolves hierarchy may accept his departure should his £50 million valuation be met.

However, Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport recently revealed that Lazio are eager to snap up Dendoncker, potentially leaving Bruno Lage without any senior central midfielders on his books.

What has O’Rourke said about Wolves?

He told GiveMeSport: “Bruno Lage, I think, won't want to lose that engine room this summer. Obviously, they would love to keep both Moutinho and Neves, but I think they can't really afford to let Dendoncker go as well.

“I think he's been a good option for Wolves over the years since his arrival, and if they were to lose Neves or Dendoncker, I think they probably will get bigger money for Neves right now.

“And it all comes down to the desire of the player. If the player wants to move, it's going to be quite hard to keep hold of them, whether that's Neves, Moutinho, or Dendoncker.”

Who could replace Moutinho and Neves?

Replacing the likes of Neves, who has made 207 outings for Wolves, Moutinho and Dendoncker will not be an easy task for Lage.

The Athletic state that Sporting CP pair Matheus Luiz Nunes and Joao Palhinha are on the 45-year-old tactician’s radar, though, following a string of impressive displays in their homeland.

Nunes and Palhinha could succeed their Portuguese compatriots in the Wolves engine room then, carrying on the close bond between the nation and the club.
