Southampton defender Tino Livramento's season-ending injury is a "disappointing" and "sad" end to his first campaign in senior football, according to ex-Saints midfielder Carlton Palmer.

The £22.5m-rated right-back suffered a serious knee problem at Brighton on Sunday and could miss the rest of 2022.

What happened to Livramento?

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a fine first season in first-team football since his move from Chelsea last summer, featuring 32 times across all competitions.

However, in the first half of Southampton's draw at Brighton last weekend, Livramento went down after trying to challenge with Seagulls midfielder Enock Mwepu and immediately signalled that he needed to come off after twisting his knee.

Livramento was eventually stretchered off and replaced by Romain Perraud, leaving the pitch requiring oxygen.

Ralph Hasenhuttl described the injury as serious after the game, and Southampton have since confirmed that the defender has suffered damage to his ACL and could be ruled out until 2023, with Livramento expected to undergo surgery on the issue.

Therefore, former Southampton midfielder Palmer reckons that it's a sorry way to end what has been a positive first season at the club for the teenager.

What did Palmer say about Livramento?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "It's disappointing and a sad way to end the season for him, his first full season in senior football and he's played really well. He's acquitted himself really well and he's a good young prospect."

How was Livramento playing before his injured?

Prior to his injury, Livramento had been one of Southampton's standout performers this season.

While he might not have been a nailed on starter of late, with the Brighton game just his third in six matches, the ex-Chelsea youngster has thrived in trying to make the right-back spot his own.

According to WhoScored, he's been Saints' seventh-best player in 2021-2022, with the defender in the top three metrics for both most tackles (1.9) and most interceptions (1.7) per 90 minutes.

Livramento might have only chipped in with one goal and one assist in the top-flight, but he makes more than one dribble every game and 0.7 key passes, which is a decent return for a right-back.

Fortunately for Southampton, they have England international Kyle Walker-Peters in reserve, but Livramento's pace and energy will be sorely missed in the months ahead.
