Former Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno won't be part of the Villarreal side that takes to the pitch for Wednesday evening's Champions League semi-final first-leg at Anfield.

The 29-year-old, who spent five seasons on Merseyside between 2014 and 2019, is currently sidelined with a torn ACL that he suffered against Osasuna back in March.

Despite his injury woes, Moreno confirmed to Marca earlier this week that he will be part of the Villarreal travelling for the match.

A regular in the Liverpool side for his first couple of seasons at the club, the former Spanish international soon found himself struggling for first-term opportunities after several erratic performances in the early days of the reign of current Reds boss Jurgen Klopp.

First benched in favour of James Milner, the emergence of Andy Robertson at left-back essentially shut the door on Moreno's chances of regular playing time.

While he may not have been a firm favourite of the Anfield faithful during his time at the club, Moreno certainly endeared himself to Liverpool fans with his celebrations after Villarreal's upset victory over Manchester United in the 2021 Europa League final.

Unai Emery's underdogs ultimately edged United out on penalties in Gdansk, with substitute Moreno slotting his own spot-kick during the shoot-out .

Naturally, Moreno was delighted to get the better of Liverpool's fierce rivals United and quickly fired up an Instagram live stream while still on the pitch, bellowing "You’ll never walk alone" into the camera.

Moreno wasn't done there, either, as he continued to bask in the glory of a win over United in the Villarreal dressing room in a further social media clip.

"For all the fans of Liverpool. VAMOS! Man United, GET OUT. GET OUT Man United. GET OUT," declared a smiling Moreno.

"You’ll never walk alone. Liverpool, my heart," he exclaimed while pounding his chest.

Things may not have worked out for Moreno at Anfield, but he confirmed to Marca that he has absolutely no ill will towards his former boss Klopp.

"If I see him at Anfield I will give him a hug and talk to him because he always treated me well, despite playing me less. As a coach, he is very close to the player, knowing what he has to say to you at all times, to motivate you."

A warm reception surely awaits Moreno on Merseyside this week.
