Leeds: 'Gamble' on 136-goal star 'would be really bad Elland Road news'

Leeds United would be taking a huge ‘gamble’ if they attempt to sign Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi and a move to Elland Road could backfire, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Batshuayi is currently on a season-long loan with Turkish giants Besiktas, but he could be set to make a permanent switch away from Stamford Bridge in the summer.

What’s the latest news involving Batshuayi?

According to TEAMtalk, Batshuayi is set to leave Chelsea at the end of the season and Leeds are mulling over whether to offer him the opportunity to have another crack at the Premier League.

The report suggests Everton, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion are also showing an interest in the 41-cap Belgium international, while Besiktas are keen to turn his temporary move into a long-term agreement and unnamed clubs in Germany, Italy and Spain are keeping tabs on the situation.

Chelsea are eager to offload Batshuayi as he is set to enter the final 12 months of his £69,000-per-week contract in the summer.

The 28-year-old has struggled to get to grips with English football since making the £33million move from Marseille close to six years ago, with him scoring 25 goals in 77 appearances.

If Batshuayi were to join Leeds, he could prove to be Jesse Marsch’s first signing since being appointed as the Yorkshire giants’ head coach in February.

What has Dean Jones said about Batshuayi?

Jones believes Leeds would be taking a major risk if they were to strengthen their interest in Batshuayi and bring him to Elland Road.

The transfer insider understands Marsch is looking to sign a frontman who has already played in the English top flight, but he is unsure as to whether the 28-year-old would be up to the task.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “For Leeds to take a gamble on another striker that doesn’t produce the goods consistently would be really bad news.

“The only thing I can say is that they do want a striker that’s got Premier League experience, so at least he ticks that box. Let’s wait and see how it actually opens up.”

Why is Batshuayi on Leeds’ radar?

Although Batshuayi has not been handed an abundance of opportunities at Chelsea, he has still shown he knows where the back of the net is by scoring 136 goals over the course of his senior club career.

Patrick Bamford is currently Leeds’ only senior centre forward, with youngsters Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood also providing alternative options as they earn their stripes.

Bamford has spent lengthy spells of the season on the sidelines through injury, so Marsch will be keen to add reinforcements to his squad.
