Tottenham: 'Conte factor' could lure £33m target to Hotspur Way

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte

It would be surprising if Tottenham managed to sign Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries this summer, but it is not impossible, says journalist Dean Jones.

The 26-year-old is currently being linked with a move to north London, and while Jones believes having Antonio Cone in charge does give Spurs a chance, the transfer insider thinks Daniel Levy will still struggle to sign him given that he has only just joined Simone Inzaghi’s side.

What is the latest news involving Dumfries?

According to Sport Mediaset (via FC Inter 1908), Tottenham are interested in signing Dumfries when the transfer window opens.

The same report states that Inter would be open to selling to the Premier League outfit for around €40m (£33m), though they could face competition from Bayern Munich.

Dumfries, who has previously been described as a bulldozer”, joined the Nerazzurri from PSV Eindhoven last summer and has impressed since arriving at the San Siro.

From right wing-back, the Dutchman has been dangerous going forward, coming up with over 10 goal contributions in all competitions, which could make him ideal for Conte’s 3-4-3 set-up.

What has Jones said about Dumfries and Tottenham?

Jones thinks the Conte factor cannot be overlooked, but the football journalist would still be surprised if Dumfries moved to north London this summer.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jones said: “He scored a massive goal for them last weekend. From what I can tell, he seems happy with where he is, and he’s new to the club. It would be surprising to see him turn his back on Inter so quickly and seek a new challenge.

“Maybe the Conte factor would be enough to do that, but I still think it would take a big sales pitch to get Dumfries at this stage to join a Tottenham team who aren’t as good as Inter Milan are.”

Will Tottenham make signing a new right wing-back a priority?

The likelihood is yes. According to The Telegraph, Conte will tell his superiors that he needs up to six summer signings for the 2022/23 season, including a right wing-back.

Considering that, it is not hard to imagine the north London club making a move for Dumfries once the transfer window is open.

Gary Lineker - Tottenham Hotspur

Which year did Gary Lineker leave Tottenham Hotspur?

However, as Jones mentioned, the Netherlands international has not been at Inter for long and is currently having a good time there. He could even go on to win the Serie A title in his first campaign at the San Siro, so will a move to Spurs really appeal to him?

Inter do, of course, have financial issues, so they could be forced to sell some players. But if that is not the case, then it is hard to see Dumfries joining Conte’s side this summer.
