Rangers: £10.8m star 'would be massive signing' at Ibrox

Giovanni van Bronckhorst celebrates victory in the Scottish Cup semi-final

Rangers could pull off a ‘massive signing’ by sealing Chelsea star Billy Gilmour’s Ibrox return in the summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst was appointed as the Gers’ boss in November and, ahead of his first full season at the helm, the Dutchman could look to take advantage of the upcoming transfer window to bolster his squad.

What’s the latest news involving Gilmour?

Gilmour is currently on a season-long loan with Premier League side Norwich City, but it appears a move north of the border could be on the cards.

According to 90min, Chelsea are willing to sanction another temporary switch away from Stamford Bridge as his form in Norfolk has not been good enough to warrant a place in Thomas Tuchel’s first-team plans.

The report suggests Rangers, along with Fulham and Bournemouth, is a potential destination for the 12-cap Scotland international.

Heading to the Gers would result in Gilmour returning to Ibrox five years after opting to head to Chelsea as a 15-year-old.

It is understood that the Glasgow giants only secured an initial payment of £500,000 for the central midfielder, while he is now valued at £10.8million by Transfermarkt.

What has Pete O’Rourke said about Gilmour?

O’Rourke believes Rangers will pull off a major coup if they succeed in luring Gilmour to Ibrox.

The journalist feels the 20-year-old’s Norwich struggles should not put van Bronckhorst off trying to strike a deal.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: “He would be a massive signing for Rangers. Obviously, Gilmour came through the ranks at Rangers before being lured away to the Premier League by Chelsea as well.

“He is a really talented player. Obviously, he’s gone to Norwich this season and it’s been a bit of a mixed season for him because he’s been in and out of the team. But, I think, on his day he has proved that, for Scotland, he’s a top, top player.”

Why would Gilmour be a good signing for Rangers?

Gilmour may only be in the early stages of his career, but he has already made 31 appearances in the Premier League.

He has also impressed on the international stage, with Roma boss Jose Mourinho describing Gilmour’s performance as ‘fantastic’ after Scotland’s goalless draw with England at Euro 2020.

Rangers are accustomed to challenging for silverware every season and, having already won the Champions League, Gilmour would relish the opportunity to win trophies in his homeland.
