Manchester United are still looking at Villarreal defender Pau Torres, claims transfer insider Dean Jones.

The Red Devils are one club who are thought to be keen on signing the 25-year-old this summer, and Jones believes there is a good chance of that happening.

What is the latest news involving Torres?

According to the reliable Fabrizio Romano, United, Manchester City and Chelsea all have eyes on Torres ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

The Spaniard has a release clause set at around €60m (£50m), which is likely to be triggered in the summer, and was reportedly a target for United last year when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was still at the helm.

Torres has been a huge figure for Villarreal this season, making over 40 appearances for the Spanish side.

Considering that, he is a player manager Unai Emery will not want to lose, but the former Arsenal boss will be powerless to prevent Torres from leaving if that release clause is triggered and he does want to go.

What has Jones said about Torres to United?

Competition for Torres' signature will be fierce, but Jones expects United to be right up there in the race to sign the centre-back and has told GIVEMESPORT that the Red Devils coming out as victors is possible.

Discussing if Torres could become one of Erik ten Hag's first signings at Old Trafford, Jones said: "Pau Torres, they're still looking at, for sure. I think there's a reasonable possibility that happens."

Do United need Torres?

Without a doubt. United have had so many issues in central defence this term, so it is vital that Ten Hag makes bringing in a new centre-half like Torres a priority.

Raphael Varane joined the club from Real Madrid last summer and much expectation came with his arrival - the France international is a four-time Champions League winner after all. However, he has not been able to escape injury this term, which is a concern.

Then there is, of course, Harry Maguire, who has come under fire all season for his form.

"It's been a tough season, for the team and for Harry, he's not played well enough," United legend Roy Keane recently said on Sky Sports (via MailOnline). "You're trying to lead a group, and it doesn't look a great group.

"Is he playing for his future? He's got to do better himself, if you want to be a decent captain you have to be at the top of your own game and hope the rest will follow."

Considering all of the above, United would be wise to splash out on Torres or another central defender this summer.
