Southampton could "try their luck" in trying to sign Chelsea striker Michy Batshuayi this summer, according to ex-Saints midfielder Carlton Palmer.

The 41-cap Belgium international still has more than 12 months left on his Stamford Bridge contract but he hasn't played competitively for the Blues for more than two years and could seek a move away from west London.

What's the latest news involving Batshuayi?

Batshuayi is in his sixth season as a Chelsea player, but considering his last appearance came during Frank Lampard's first campaign as manager suggests that he has little future under Thomas Tuchel.

He spent last season on loan at Crystal Palace but scored just twice before he returned to Chelsea.

But he's faring much better at Besiktas, scoring an impressive 14 goals and laid on five assists in the Turkish top-flight to help his side challenge for a place in Europe.

Batshuayi's form appears to have caught the attention of Ralph Hasenhuttl's side, who one of five Premier League teams keen on signing him this summer.

According to TEAMtalk, Wolves, Everton, Brighton, and Leeds are all in the race for the striker, who's scored 15 goals in 77 appearances in England's top-flight.

And Palmer expects Southampton to seek an opportunity to try and sign the 28-year-old when the window reopens for business.

What did Palmer say about Batshuayi?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "Of course, all of the players that are out on loan, the managers and chairman are going to try their luck with Chelsea, knowing that the situation they're in at the moment."

Do Southampton need Batshuayi?

Southampton currently have four senior strikers on their books in Armando Broja, Shane Long, Adam Armstrong and Che Adams.

However, Long is out of contract at the end of the season and is expected to leave, while Broja is likely to return to Chelsea following his loan spell.

That would leave Hasenhuttl with just two senior frontman, meaning Batshuayi would be a welcome addition should they fight off competition from some of their Premier League rivals.

Batshuayi has an underwhelming record in English football, but he has found the net 142 times in his senior club career, while he has an impressive record of 23 goals in 41 games on the international stage.

Therefore, if Southampton could get him for a reasonable price, which is likely considering his contract situation, they would be getting themselves a player who knows where the net is.
