Liverpool are chasing a historic quadruple this season. With the Carabao Cup already in their back pocket, the Reds are well on track for an unprecedented achievement in English football as they bear down on the FA Cup and Champions League finals. With the former safely in the bank and the latter just 90 minutes away, the general consensus is that the hardest piece of the puzzle for Liverpool to attain will be the Premier League title.

Liverpool chasing Man City

Why? Well, because it's completely out of their hands and winning every single one of their remaining games in England's top-flight this season might not be enough to secure the trophy.

Don't think for a second that we're calling the Champions League final and a clash with Chelsea at Wembley easy, but at least Liverpool have an element of control over winning those titles.

In the league, Jurgen Klopp's men simply have to keep their heads down, keep winning and hope that Manchester City drop the ball.

Sadly for the Reds, this weekend proved to be another occasion where the Citizens held onto their one-point lead at the top of the table as they secured a ruthless 4-0 win at Leeds United.

However, by the same token, Liverpool still kept up their side of the bargain as they bagged a hard-fought 1-0 victory at the home of one of the league's most in-form teams: Newcastle United.

Klopp shows his elite mentality

And with that impressive result coming a few hours before City snatched three points at Elland Road, BT Sport's Des Kelly couldn't help prompting Klopp that the spotlight was now on their title rivals.

An understandable statement, right? You could certainly forgive the Liverpool boss for putting his feet up that afternoon and watching on in hope that the Citizens dropped points in Yorkshire.

But no, Klopp instead showed the world exactly why he's got the perfect mentality to lead Liverpool into a battle for quadruple glory by doubling down on the fact that Villarreal are now his focus.

According to the Mirror, Klopp snapped back in reply: "No, to Villarreal. They are 2-1 down, playing at the moment [versus Alaves]. That's what I'm interested in. I haven't thought a second until now about City, but immediately about Villarreal."

Liverpool's dressing room prep

However, the elite mentality didn't end there with Klopp confirming in his post-match press conference that preparations for the second leg had literally begun in the St. James' Park dressing rooms.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Klopp doubled down by saying: “We finished the game and the analysts were in the dressing room and we’re asking how Villarreal are playing.

"They play now as well, were 2-1 down and made changes as well. That’s our life.

“Yeah, we’re excited. I love this football team and we go into the next one and try to be as good as possible but that’s it pretty much. It’s a very good situation for us. The games we still have to play, it’s a lot. With or without a Champions League final, it’s a lot.

“I’m very excited but not because of the prospect of winning something, because I never understood that. We are just concerned about winning the next game.”

The mentality required for glory

As draining, fatiguing and downright exhausting as that sort of mentality might sound, it's simply the reality if you want to be a football manager that wins titles after titles after titles for your team.

It's the very same mentality that helped Sir Alex Ferguson to churn out silverware at Manchester United, fostering a headspace where his squad was always looking for the next big achievement.

And Liverpool fans must be buoyed by the fact that Klopp isn't taking the second leg of their Champions League semi-final lightly despite it looking like a relatively straightforward game on paper.

Yes, the Reds are leading 2-0 on aggregate and yes, Villarreal are just about the weakest semi-final opponents you could wish for, but nothing is guaranteed in football and complacency is a killer.

So, just in those little answers and details that Klopp gave away at St. James' Park, you can really tell how focused the Liverpool manager is on the things that he can directly control.

It really is a case of just close your eyes and hope for the best in terms of City dropping points in the league, but getting the better of Villarreal is something that Klopp can very much influence. Game on.
