There was drama at the weigh-in ahead of Saturday’s main event fight at UFC 274 between Justin Gaethje (23-3) and Charles Oliveira (32-8) last night. Gaethje, the challenger, made the 155-pound limit, but the current lightweight champion Oliveira tipped the scales half a pound over the limit. He was then given one hour to lose that weight, but he couldn't, meaning he had to vacate the title. This means that regardless of the result of Saturday’s fight, Oliveira will not be the lightweight champion. Either Gaethje will be the new title holder, or the belt will remain vacant. This has never happened before in the history of the UFC, and it is highly embarrassing for the fighter, who remained convinced throughout that he had made weight and the scales were faulty.Oliveira and his team have been arguing that they made the weight on the scales back at the hotel prior to the official weigh-in, and that the scales used weren’t working correctly. There isn’t much sympathy to be found for the Brazilian, however, and certainly not from his opponent.

As you can see from this Twitter post, Gaethje is gloating that he has made weight and subsequently piled on 10 pounds in short order. The American has clearly managed to time his weight cut just right, whilst Oliveira has been embarrassed on the biggest stage and with real financial consequences to him down the road.

He isn’t the first fighter in history to have failed to make weight, however, boxer Frankie Gavin, a GB gold medal prospect at the Beijing Olympics, failed to make weight and flew home before throwing a punch in anger.

Oliveira at least gets to fight and will hope to ride the wave of anger and use it as motivation to beat Gaethje. His opponent’s Instagram story will surely be used as fuel for the fire.

Outside of the Oliveira vs Gaethje fight, the other title bout on the card is in the women’s strawweight division between defending champion Rose Namajunas (11-4) and challenger Carla Esparza (18-6).

The two fought back in 2014 where Esparza won by submission in the third round. A lot has changed in the intervening years, though, with Rosa on a three-fight winning streak and Carla on a five-fight winning streak of her own.

Both women will feel confident heading into the fight. Their preparation has gone well, including making the weight, Oliveira take note.
