On May 1, 2011 (US time), it was announced that Osama Bin Laden had been killed by the US military.

This was the same day as WWE's Extreme Rules pay-per-view event, with the news actually breaking during the show.

The show was main evented by a triple threat steel cage match for the WWE Championship, featuring John Cena, The Miz and John Morrison.

After winning the title, Cena was given the honour of announcing the news to the crowd, explaining that the US military had "caught and compromised to a permanent end Osama Bin Laden."

The news was met with a strong 'USA' chant from the fans in attendance, many of whom were caught on camera reacting to the breaking news.

For those that don't know, Bin Laden's killing came after a lengthy mass search for him from the US military.

Bin Laden was captured during an early morning raid in Pakistan on May 2, 2011, which was during the evening in America.

The operation was carried out by the US Naval Special Warfare Development Group (SEAL Team Six) and the Central Intelligence Agency SAD/SOG, which came after orders from US President Barack Obama.

Obama made a TV address at the time announcing that Bin Laden had been killed, but because they were at the WWE show, fans at the St Pete Times Forum in Tampa may have missed the breaking news.

So, after the show had gone off the air and Cena won the title, WWE made the call to have 'Big Match John' go out and share the news.

I walk out here every night with hustle, loyalty and respect on my sleeve. That is a credo I’ve adopted from the men and women who defend the freedom of this country. The President has just announced that we have caught and compromised – to a permanent end – Osama bin Laden.”
