Aston Villa signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez this summer would be "outstanding", says journalist Josh Holland.

The Uruguayan is attracting interest from several clubs after an excellent season in Portugal, with Villa being one of those outfits.

What is the latest news involving Nunez?

According to Fabrizio Romano, Nunez will leave Benfica in the upcoming transfer window and is valued at around €80m (£67m).

It is a large fee, but Benfica's valuation comes as no surprise given the season that the 22-year-old is having. In 40 appearances, he has scored 34 goals, with 26 of those coming in the Portuguese league.

Regarding potential destinations, 90min claimed at the end of March that the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Villa had been in contact with the player's representatives.

The Athletic, however, states that Manchester United, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are currently the ones leading the race for Nunez's signature.

What has Holland said about Nunez to Villa?

Amid all of the interest in him, Holland thinks it would be quite some achievement if Villa managed to land Nunez this summer.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the football journalist said: "Bringing in players like Nunez would be outstanding. Can they do it? We don't know, but it'd be a good talking topic if it happens."

Can Villa win the race for Nunez?

It seems unlikely. There is a lot of interest in the Uruguay international, who has been described as a "sensational talent", and from some real heavyweights of European football.

Last month, The Telegraph reported that Newcastle United had turned their attention away from Nunez because they believe that he wants to join a Champions League team, so Villa are quite clearly in an unfavourable position.

Targeting a player of the former Almeria man's calibre at least shows ambition; some Villa fans may be happy to just see that. The Villans also do not have the worst forward options at present, so the above is not the end of the world.

Watkins is on course to reach double figures in the Premier League again this season after scoring 14 goals last term, while Danny Ings is still a capable striker despite his struggles since arriving at Villa Park.

He has only netted six times in the current campaign, and there is now talk about a potential move to Brighton in a deal that could see Yves Bissouma head in the other direction. But if the former Southampton man stays, given his overall goal record in the top flight, he is not a bad alternative to Watkins and may just need more time to settle.

Ultimately, Villa supporters would love to have a No.9 like Nunez at their club, but they are probably going to have to be content with Watkins, Ings and maybe another centre-forward who is not the Benfica star.
