Arsenal 'really pushed' to bring £50m star to the Emirates

Dominic Calvert-Lewin‘s “poor” season might lead to Arsenal thinking twice about signing him this summer, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

Injuries and a loss of form have restricted the England striker to just three Premier League goals this season and his struggles were highlighted when he was left on the bench for the victory over Chelsea on Sunday.

What’s the latest news involving Calvert-Lewin?

Arsenal’s interest in the striker dates back to the summer of 2021 when he was off the back of scoring 21 goals in all competitions, the best return of his career.

With Eddie Nketiah and Alexandre Lacazette’s contracts into the final 12 months, Mikel Arteta was hoping to add another striker to his squad, with the Gunners considering a £50m move for the Everton frontman.

Let’s start easy: who’s this iconic character?

However, Arsenal’s interest quickly ended, and he stayed on Merseyside. And when the Gunners made a woeful start to this campaign, losing their opening three matches and Calvert-Lewin scoring three goals during that period, it looked to have been a questionable decision for Arteta’s men not to pursue a deal.

But Calvert-Lewin hasn’t scored since August, although various injuries have restricted him to just 10 top-flight appearances during that period.

According to Football Insider, Calvert-Lewin remains keen on moving to the Emirates this summer, but Brown believes that Arsenal might be concerned about his form.

What did Brown say about Calvert-Lewin?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Calvert-Lewin, who I’m told is the guy they really pushed for.

“The fact that he’s hardly played the last few weeks and has had a really poor season and doesn’t look like the same player might make them think twice about spending too much money on him, but I do think that’s the type of player Arsenal want.”

Have Arsenal been linked with any other strikers?

While Calvert-Lewin could once again become an option for Arteta, the Arsenal boss clearly has alternatives.

According to The Athletic, the north London outfit are already exploring the possibility of signing Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus, who’s been in outstanding form of late, netting six times in the last three games, four of which came in the victory over Watford.

Jesus would be open to a move to Arsenal, while the report believes that his representatives have already held talks with technical director Edu.

But Arsenal are also keeping a close eye on ex-Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, who’s scored 24 goals in 48 games since signing for Roma.
