Liverpool: Klopp 'looking to strengthen' key position at Anfield

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is looking to sign a central midfielder this summer as he still hasn’t fully replaced Georginio Wijnaldum, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

After spending five years at Anfield, Wijnaldum opted to let his contract run down, before leaving to join PSG last July on a free transfer.

Which midfielders have Liverpool been linked with?

The Reds have been linked with two midfielders who are currently playing abroad in the shape of Aurelien Tchouameni and Jude Bellingham.

Tchouameni is still only 22, but has impressed at Monaco, catching Liverpool’s eye. However, it is understood that Real Madrid are currently favourites to land him ahead of next season.

Meanwhile, Bellingham is four years younger than Tchouameni, and has been flourishing at Borussia Dortmund. Liverpool may have difficulties getting a deal over the line for him, though, due to the German club looking set to lose Erling Haaland. It appears unlikely that they would sell two of their best players in the same transfer window.

What has O’Rourke said about Liverpool’s transfer plans?

O’Rourke has claimed that Jurgen Klopp is targeting a new midfielder after failing to bring in anyone to succeed £19.8m-rated star Wijnaldum last year.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s still an area that needs to improve in his midfield because they haven’t really replaced Gini Wijnaldum since his move to PSG last summer. So, it is maybe an area of the squad that he is looking to strengthen.”

Do Liverpool need to sign a midfielder?

At the moment, it is hard to fault the squad that Klopp has assembled at Liverpool.

The 54-year-old has multiple options to call upon in pretty much every position on the pitch, and this has allowed the Merseyside club to compete on all fronts this term.

However, the midfield area is perhaps one position that could be slightly improved this summer. Liverpool have Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and Naby Keita to cover the middle of the pitch, while James Milner, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are perfectly capable back-up options.

Milner is out of contract in June, though, while Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain are about to enter the final year of their respective deals, and Jones has perhaps not kicked on as much as some at the club may have hoped this season.

Therefore, with the futures of some midfielders looking a little uncertain right now, it could be a good idea to bring in a fresh face in midfield to ensure that there is enough strength in depth in this position, while also keeping the current crop of players on their toes.
