A number of sportswomen, including Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki, attended the iconic Met Gala in New York. Organised by American fashion magazine Vogue, The Met Gala is an annual fundraising gala held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. This yearâs theme, selected to celebrate the opening of the "In America: An Anthology of Fashion" exhibition, was âGilded Glamourâ.Tennis stars have often attended the Met Gala, with four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka even co-chairing last yearâs event. This year was no different, with Williams and Wozniacki both walking the red carpet. Styled by Law Roach, Williams wore a stylish black suit with her hair in knee-length braids. The 41-year-old is a seven-time Grand Slam winner who dominated womenâs tennis alongside her sister Serena Williams. The pair have not yet retired from the sport but have rarely played on the WTA Tour in recent times.
In an interview with E!: Met Gala, Williams compared preparing for the fundraising event with getting ready for a tennis match.
âI think there's less breakfast when you're at the Met because you're trying to keep everything squeezed in,â she said. âBut I'm eating pasta at 8 a.m. if I'm playing a match. It's like a whole other life.â
Wozniacki attended the Met Gala in a Christian Siriano ensemble. In contrast to the Williams sisters, the 2018 Australian Open champion is now retired.
She bid an emotional goodbye to tennis last month, despite officially stepping away from the court in January 2020.
Wozniacki had been set to play a farewell match against Serena Williams at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, but the encounter was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a result, the 31-year-old returned to the court at the start of April for a friendly match against close friend and three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber.
A couple of female athletes who starred at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics joined Venus Williams and Wozniacki on the red carpet.
Two-time Olympic snowboarding champion Chloe Kim wore a fluffy white Giambattista Valli Couture ball gown, which featured red feathers.
Olympic freestyle skiing gold medallist Eileen Gu, who is also a model, wore a Louis Vuitton leather mini-dress.
