Tottenham could sign a midfielder this summer providing they still have funds available, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

Antonio Conte is already putting plans into place to strengthen his squad when the window reopens for business and a midfielder could be on his radar.

What are Tottenham's current midfield options?

Including Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele, Tottenham currently have six midfielders under contract.

However, Lo Celso has already been heavily linked with a permanent move to Villarreal, while Ndombele doesn't have a future in north London and could be loaned out once again this summer.

That would leave Conte with four central midfielders, although Harry Winks is badly out of favour, failing to start a top-flight game since February, which could see him move on to pastures new in search of more regular first-team football.

Winks departing would leave just Oliver Skipp, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur as Conte's only options, which could force Fabio Paratici to lean towards the transfer market, although Brown believes that Spurs have more important issues to fix before targeting a midfielder.

What did Brown say about Tottenham?

When asked about Tottenham potentially signing Konrad Laimer, Brown told GIVEMESPORT that they could invest in midfield - but only after securing a striker and a centre-back: "I think they will definitely sign a striker and a centre-back this summer.

"If there is money left over, I could see them looking in midfield, but I don't think it's the position of priority."

Which midfielders have Tottenham been linked with?

According to the Telegraph, Conte could even look to sign two central midfielders this summer, with Tottenham guaranteed to be playing at least in the Europa League next season.

One of those will surely have to be a creator, with Hojbjerg, Winks, Bentancur and Skipp contributing to just two goals and four assists between them, with four of those six goals coming from Hojbjerg.

Therefore, it comes as little surprise that Tottenham are one of many Premier League clubs keen on signing Christian Eriksen, who's available on a free transfer, providing he doesn't sign fresh terms with Brentford.

The Dane has already shown in his short time back in English football that he remains one of the top attacking midfielders around, with one goal and two assists in his seven starts, which puts him top of Brentford's WhoScored rating list.

The report also believes that Spurs could take advantage of Youri Tielemans' contract situation at Leicester and prize the Belgian away from the King Power Stadium, with the 24-year-old set to enter the final 12 months of his Foxes deal.
