Journalist Josh Holland believes Wolves must strengthen out wide this summer amid links with Newcastle United star Allan Saint-Maximin.

The Midlands club are one outfit who are reportedly interested in signing the 25-year-old when the transfer window reopens.

What is the latest news involving Saint-Maximin and Wolves?

According to 90min, Newcastle are open to selling Saint-Maximin, alerting Wolves, who are looking to replace Adama Traore.

As well as Wolves, Everton are also thought to be interested in the winger, but any move is likely to hinge on them retaining their status as a Premier League side.

Saint-Maximin could prove to be an expensive purchase, though, with the Mail on Sunday claiming that Newcastle are looking for a fee of around £50m for the Frenchman.

While Saint-Maximin is not the most efficient player in front of goal, scoring just five times in the league this season, he continues to cause defenders up and down the country problems.

"Saint-Maximin was absolutely unplayable tonight," former Newcastle player Rob Lee said after the Magpies star's performance against Everton back in February (BT Sport via Chronicle Live).

"He was causing so many problems throughout the game," Lee later went on to add.

What has Holland said about Wolves?

Following the club's links with Saint-Maximin, Holland told GIVEMESPORT that Wolves need to sign some new wingers.

When asked if they have to strengthen out wide this summer, the football journalist said: "Yeah, of course. I think they've got to. Looking at their squad, you've got [Pedro] Neto, [Daniel] Podence, [Francisco] Trincao and Hwang [Hee-chan]. But would you say that all four of them have had a telling effect in this season? I wouldn't say so.

"Saint-Maximin, I think we all know, is such a good player to watch. He gave Wolves so many problems [last month]. It was more like a trial game for him; it had the feeling that he was trying to impress Wolves."

Have Wolves' wide players done enough this term?

As Holland touched on, the wide men Bruno Lage currently has at his disposal have not been able to make a consistent impact.

Neto, of course, is being eased back after picking up that serious knee injury last year. But as for the others, Lage probably would have wanted a bit more from them.

Hwang started the campaign excellently, scoring four times in his first six league games, but has not been able to build on that, while Podence and Trincao have just the three top-flight goals combined.

When you consider all of the above, bringing a new winger to Molineux this summer surely has to be a priority for Lage.
