Beth Mead, Pernille Harder: The top 5 WSL goals of the season

Top 5 WSL goals of the season

Extravagant chips, mazy solo runs, long-range thunderbolts –– this year’s Women’s Super League has been filled with outstanding goals.

Ona Battle’s finish for Manchester United against Reading, Sarah Mayling’s free-kick for Aston Villa versus Leicester, and Hanna Benison’s memorable effort against Birmingham were just some of the notable individual strikes from this campaign.

However, none of these have made GiveMeSport Women’s top five goals of the 2021/2022 season.

With so many worthy strikes to choose from, here’s who made our list:

Beth Mead

Mead has enjoyed a stellar season for the Gunners and a few of her goals have been goal of the season contenders.

Her precise finish against Chelsea at the Emirates on the opening weekend set the tone for what was to come, while her match-winning free-kick against Brighton was named Arsenal’s goal of the month for January.

It’s her strike against Aston Villa last weekend that makes our list though. The Gunners won the game 7-0 and Mead’s majestic long-range effort was the pick of the bunch.

After receiving the ball from Katie McCabe, the English forward took one touch, looked up, before unleashing a dipping, swerving and unstoppable shot into the top right corner.

Pernille Harder

Harder showcased her range of tricks against Tottenham recently when she set up Kerr’s winning goal.

But her finest moment came against Man United back in September. The Danish star picked up the ball on the halfway line, glided past half of United’s side, before chipping the ball over Mary Earps.

Chelsea went on to win the match 6-1 and they’ve barely looked back in the league ever since.

Caroline Weir

Weir has a habit of scoring wonder goals against Man United. In 2019, she hammered home the inaugural Manchester derby goal from 25 yards out, while last season she executed a sumptuous chip to perfection.

This year was no exception as Weir produced a near-identical chip with just 10 minutes left to hand the Citizens all three points.

The goal could prove to be crucial come the end of the season, with City now in pole position to secure the final Champions League spot.

Katie McCabe

It comes as no surprise that McCabe makes this list. The Irish star has made a habit of scoring incredible goals and our favourite from this year has to be her strike against Aston Villa.

After a mistake by Hannah Hampton in goal, McCabe was gifted possession. The 26-year-old took one look-up, saw Hampton off her line, before executing an inch-perfect lob over the English keeper’s head.

Claudia Walker

Walker, who joined West Ham this season after three years with Birmingham City, made a huge impact against her former club with a breathtaking individual effort.

The 25-year-old picked the ball up on the halfway line, weaved through multiple defenders, before shooting from outside the box and finding the top left corner.

It was a goal worthy of winning any game but unfortunately, the Hammers could only manage a 1-1 draw.
