Manchester United's next manager Erik ten Hag may struggle to get the time he needs to turn things around at the club, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Ten Hag is set to leave Ajax to take over from interim boss Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford this summer, and Jones has suggested he will need to make an immediate impact or he could be cast aside like many of his predecessors.

How long have Man United's previous managers lasted?

Following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013, United turned to David Moyes, but he was sacked after less than a year, with the team outside of the Champions League places.

Louis van Gaal came next, and he was given more time, but he still only lasted two years before he was shown the exit door, despite winning the FA Cup in his final game in charge.

Jose Mourinho won the League Cup and Europa League in his first year at the helm, and led United to a second-place finish the following season, but things quickly went downhill, leading to him being sacked in December 2018.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer replaced him, and took the Red Devils to a Europa League final, but he failed to win any silverware, and was fired in November.

What has Jones said about Man United giving ten Hag time?

It appears that United need a major rebuild this summer, and they are aware that there is no quick fix to their current problems.

Ten Hag has been given a three-year contract, with the option of a further 12 months after that. However, Jones has questioned whether United will have the patience to stand by ten Hag, given that none of their last four managers have lasted in the job for more than three years.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I know that they want to give him time, and that might take three or four years. But no other manager has had three or four years to put things in place, so why would ten Hag get that opportunity? It’s going to be really hard to assess what they do.”

What should Man United's expectations be for ten Hag's first season in charge?

Ten Hag has a huge job on his hands before a ball is even kicked next season, with the summer transfer window set to be a fascinating one at Old Trafford.

A number of players are out of contract and will probably move on, while the Dutchman will also expect to be given money to make signings to reshape his squad.

With a major overhaul of the playing staff likely to take place, it seems unrealistic to think that United will be competing with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool for the title.

However, the immediate target should be to get back into the top four, ensuring that the team return to the Champions League.

If they can do that, and ten Hag is able to start to establish a clear playing style, this should be enough to keep the club's hierarchy happy, allowing him time to take his side to the next level in the seasons that follow.
