Aston Villa: £9m star 'definitely of interest' at Villa Park

Aston Villa head coach Steven Gerrard watches on

Aston Villa could look to lure Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson to Villa Park as he is ‘definitely of interest’ to head coach Steven Gerrard, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Gerrard was appointed as the Midlands side’s boss last November and, ahead of his first full season at the helm, he may freshen up his squad when the summer window opens for business.

What’s the latest news involving Nelsson?

According to Turkish media outlet Tum Spor, Villa are monitoring Nelsson closely ahead of potentially heading to the negotiating table at the end of the season.

The report suggests representatives from the Premier League club have been scouting the four-cap Denmark international and they are expected to lodge a lucrative offer for the Galatasaray star.

It appears Villa could face competition for Nelsson’s signature as the likes of Newcastle United, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid have also been watching the centre-back in action.

Nelsson was previously on Villa’s radar two years ago and Crystal Palace also considered making a move last summer.

However, Galatasaray are in a strong negotiating position should Villa look to strengthen their interest as his contract with the Turkish giants is not due to expire until the summer of 2026.

What has Dean Jones said about Nelsson?

Jones understands that Nelsson is among the names on Gerrard’s list of targets ahead of potentially stumping up a bid in the summer.

The transfer insider feels the 23-year-old has worked his way onto Villa’s radar as they are keen to avoid getting into bidding wars for big-name stars.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “Victor Nelsson is somebody that is definitely of interest. It’s probably good that they’re looking for players a bit different to all the other names you see linked to all the big clubs.

“Villa have got to be a little bit smarter about their recruitment this summer because they don’t want to get in price wars with some of the other big clubs in the Premier League as you just end up paying over the odds.

“That’s not really a situation they want to be in even though they have got a lot of money.”

Why is Nelsson of interest to Villa?

Nelsson may still be in the early stages of his career, but he has already shown he has plenty of talent over the course of 227 senior club appearances.

Described as a ‘Danish lion’ by Galatasaray board member Resit Omer Kukner, Nelsson has been a key component of his current employers’ backline and is approaching 50 appearances for the season.

Gerrard currently has central defenders Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Calum Chambers and Kortney Hause to call upon at Villa Park, but the £9million-rated Nelsson could bolster the Premier League outfit’s options.
