Newcastle: Eddie Howe handed 'massive boost' at St James' Park

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe

Fabian Schar’s recent contract extension is a “massive boost” for Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Following his revival since Howe replaced Steve Bruce back in October, the 69-cap Switzerland international was rewarded with a new deal, which runs until the summer of 2024.

What’s the latest news involving Schar?

Prior to Howe’s arrival, the centre-back had made just a handful of top-flight outings this season and appeared to be on his way out of St James’ Park this summer, with his deal expiring at the end of June.

However, his appointment has led to a resurgence from the 30-year-old, who’s started all-but three of his top-flight games as manager of the Toon Army.

Which club did Shay Given start his professional career at?

Following Schar’s return to the side, Newcastle have only lost seven of the 22 games that he’s started under Howe, and five of those came against teams currently sitting inside the top six, highlighting the improvements that the Magpies have made with him in the starting line-up.

As a result, Howe was keen to keep the defender on board, which is why he signed a two-year contract last month.

And Jones believes that his turnaround in fortunes is great news for Howe, who’s clearly earned the trust from those above him.

What did Jones say about Schar?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “It’s been a massive boost for Eddie Howe because it shows that the club has confidence in his own vision and shows that Eddie Howe has got a big say on how this team shapes up for the future.”

Is anyone else close to signing a new contract?

Just days after Schar’s contract was confirmed, Paul Dummett put pen to paper on a one-year extension, with his current deal expiring next month. The defender has made just three appearances all season and none since February, but he has ‘impressed senior figures on Tyneside.

Meanwhile, the club are hoping to extend Jonjo Shelvey’s stay on Tyneside. The midfielder has played a key role under Howe’s guidance and has even captained the side for the last few months in Jamaal Lascelles’ absence.

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle want his contract situation sorted before the start of the 2022-2023 campaign. Shelvey is coming up to the final 12 months of his current deal and the Magpies want his future resolved before Howe takes charge of his first full season at St James’ Park.
