Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles is set to leave St James' Park as he will be 'available for transfer' when the summer window opens for business, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Having spent large spells of the season in the relegation zone, the Magpies have climbed into the top half of the Premier League standings, but there are doubts over whether Lascelles will still be on Tyneside by the time next term gets underway.

What's the latest news involving Lascelles?

According to i News, Newcastle could be tempted into considering offers for Lascelles at the end of the season.

The report suggests Eddie Howe, who was appointed as the Magpies' head coach last November, is preparing to cash-in on a number of stars as he looks to streamline his squad.

Lascelles has been on the Tyneside giants' books since 2014, with him joining in a £7million double deal which also involved Karl Darlow heading to St James' Park from Nottingham Forest.

The 28-year-old has gone on to establish himself as Newcastle's captain and made more than 200 appearances along the way.

Lascelles, who also won the Championship title with the Magpies in 2017, still has more than two years remaining on his £40,000-per-week contract.

What has Dean Jones said about Lascelles?

Jones believes Lascelles' time on Tyneside is nearing its end and the central defender will be allowed to leave Newcastle in the summer.

The transfer insider feels the Magpies, having become the richest club in world football thanks to the Saudi Arabia-based Public Investment Fund completing a £305million takeover last October, are seeking an upgrade.

When asked what the future holds for Lascelles, Jones told GIVEMESPORT: "He'll be available for transfer in the summer.

"The circumstances just aren't going to suit him at this stage and Newcastle are looking to transition beyond him.

"It's just the vision that Newcastle have right now and, from what I understand, Lascelles probably isn't going to fit in with it."

How has Lascelles performed this season?

Lascelles went into the weekend having made 24 appearances since the campaign got underway, while he has also chipped in with a solitary goal.

However, the centre-half is no longer one of the first names on the team-sheet as he went into today's clash with Manchester City having only started two of Newcastle's last 13 Premier League fixtures, potentially emphasising that the Magpies are preparing for life without their skipper.

While Lascelles has been made to contend with lengthy spells watching on from the substitutes' bench, Howe has hailed his continued leadership as 'absolutely superb' despite being left frustrated by his lack of opportunities.
