Leeds United have a ’90 per cent chance’ of signing Red Bull Salzburg attacking midfielder Brenden Aaronson this summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 21-year-old was the subject of multiple bids from the Whites during the January transfer window but ended up remaining with the Austrian champions.

What is the latest news involving Aaronson?

Aaronson, who has been described as "special", registered seven goals and five assists in 25 appearances under the tutelage of new Leeds manager Jesse Marsch during their short time together at Salzburg.

However, the west Yorkshire outfit were keen to snap up the USA international long before his compatriot succeeded Marcelo Bielsa in the Elland Road hot seat.

According to The Athletic, Leeds had a £15 million bid rejected for Aaronson in the winter as they didn’t want to lose one of their most influential figures before the Champions League knockout stages had begun.

Sky Sports then claimed that the Premier League outfit had an improved offer of £20m turned down as it still fell below Salzburg’s £30m asking price.

Marsch’s arrival at Leeds has only intensified the links between Aaronson and the club, though, and they could revive their interest in the creative talent when the market reopens for business.

What has Jones said about Aaronson?

Leeds are currently embroiled in a relegation battle, and who they can sign ahead of next season will largely depend on what division they are playing in.

Jones has revealed that they are in with a very strong chance of snapping up Aaronson if they can maintain their Premier League status, but that demotion to the Championship will ensure his arrival ‘does not happen’.

He told GiveMeSport: “It would kill their chances of signing players like Brenden Aaronson as well (being relegated). He is a prime target, and I think if they stay up, there is a 90 per cent chance that Brendan Aaronson signs, but if Leeds are relegated, that does not happen.”

Can Leeds avoid relegation?

Leeds are currently hovering just one place and two points above the relegation zone with only four games of the season remaining.

Marsch’s charges have also played one game more than 18th-placed Everton, leaving them in an extremely precarious position.

Tricky fixtures against Arsenal and Chelsea are next up for Leeds, but they’ll be hoping to pick up maximum points against Brighton and Brentford to take them to the magical mark of 40 points.

Remaining in the top-flight will surely be pivotal in their attempts to lure the likes of Aaronson to the club, and Marsch will be desperate to do just that.
