Wolves manager Bruno Lage needs to be backed by the club's board this summer to prevent things from turning sour at Molineux, claims Midlands journalist Josh Holland.

The Premier League outfit have been relatively quiet in the transfer market since Lage arrived last year, but Holland thinks that will have to change to keep the Portuguese boss happy.

Who have Wolves signed since Lage joined?

Wolves made five signings last summer who are part of their current first-team.

Jose Sa has been the standout addition to the team, ensuring that Rui Patricio has not been missed, while Hee-chan Hwang has shown some promising signs, particularly in the early stages of the season.

Meanwhile, Rayan Ait-Nouri made his temporary switch a permanent one, but has only been on the fringes of the side this term. Trincao and Yerson Mosquera have both failed to make the desired impact at their new club.

Overall, Wolves spent less than £25m on these five players, and then did not strengthen their squad in January.

What has Holland said about Wolves' summer plans?

Holland believes things could start to go wrong for Wolves if Lage does not get support from the club's hierarchy when the transfer window opens.

Talking about the prospect of Lage being given very little money to spend, Holland told GIVEMESPORT: “I think that’s a big problem. If Bruno Lage doesn’t get backed, how long is he going to wait for? He’s obviously been told he’s going to get backed, and he’s not.

“In January, he said he wanted signings, and I don’t think they brought any in. They just let Traore go. So, I think it could turn a bit sour at Wolves.”

How big is this summer for Wolves?

This summer could be a significant one of the Midlands-based club.

Overall, this season has been a positive one for the team, with Lage getting them back into the top-half of the table.

However, they have lost three on the bounce without scoring, and their campaign seems to be fizzling out.

They may also lose Ruben Neves in the coming months as he has been linked with a move away, and he has been a crucial part of Wolves' success in recent years.

The squad needs to be freshened up this summer, with Lage given funds to add strength in depth in key areas, or their recent struggles could continue into next season, and Wolves may drop out of European contention and back into the bottom-half again.
