Chelsea could be busy in the summer transfer window as the Blues' incoming owners will want to make a statement at Stamford Bridge, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

The west Londoners are currently third in the Premier League, but there are still doubts as to who will be ruling over the club by the time next season gets underway.

What's the latest news involving Chelsea's takeover?

Roman Abramovich put Chelsea up for sale in March and, within a matter of days, the Russian oligarch was sanctioned by the UK government as part of its response to his nation's invasion of Ukraine.

It is understood that a consortium led by Todd Boehly, the owner of Major League Baseball franchise LA Dodgers, is the preferred bidder and in pole position to claim the keys to Stamford Bridge after placing an offer worth £2.5billion.

That is despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe tabling a last-gasp £4.25billion proposal, with Tom Crotty - a director at the Ratcliffe-owned chemicals producer Ineos Group - confirming the bid was 'rejected out of hand'.

According to Forbes, Boehly is worth a staggering £3.6billion and Chelsea could become the latest sports club to add to his portfolio as, as well as owning the LA Dodgers, he is a minority shareholder in NBA giants Los Angeles Lakers.

However, the sale of Chelsea has been thrown into doubt as Abramovich is attempting to restructure the deal in order to reclaim the £1.5billion he loaned the club despite the UK government insisting the Blues will fail to change hands unless it is completely certain the Russian will not receive any of the proceeds.

What has Paul Brown said about the situation?

Brown believes Chelsea's incoming owners - whenever that may be - will want to flex their financial muscles during their first transfer window at the helm.

However, the journalist warns it will be difficult to spend the cash needed to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the Premier League.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT: "The problem is nobody knows how much money Chelsea will have to spend in the summer.

"They're losing players without getting a fee for them and the days of billionaire owners spending vast amounts of money every summer at Chelsea might be over, depending on who takes over at the club.

"I'm sure whoever comes in will want to make some kind of statement in their first transfer window, but the kind of figures you'd have to spend to get close to Manchester City and Liverpool are so high that, over the long-term, I think you have to wonder whether anyone who buys the club will really push the boat out and have that kind of commitment."

How have Chelsea been impacted on the pitch?

The sanctioning of Abramovich has meant they have been unable to offer lucrative new contracts to the likes of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, whose current agreements expire in the summer.

Chelsea's hopes of keeping Rudiger at the club have long gone as head coach Thomas Tuchel has confirmed the central defender will leave at the end of his deal.

Meanwhile, according to Spanish sources, Christensen has signed a five-year Barcelona contract worth £21million.
