Real Madrid's Rodrygo Goes saves CL tie vs Man City with quickfire brace

There were absolute scenes at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday evening.

Manchester City appeared to be strolling towards another Champions League final after a brilliant second half goal from Riyad Mahrez put them 5-3 ahead in their semi-final tie.

But Real Madrid, as they always seem to do, defied all the odds in Europe’s top-tier competition to level things on aggregate in the dying embers of the game.

A dramatic stoppage-time brace from substitute Rodrygo Goes saved Los Blancos and sent the match to extra-time.

Amazingly, they were Real Madrid’s first two shots on target and according to Opta, it’s the first time a player has scored twice in the 90th minute of a Champions League knockout encounter.

Check out the Rodrygo’s second goal, which was a brilliant header from Dani Carvajal’s cross, here…

Unbelievable scenes! And what a cameo by Rodrygo, even better than his one in the quarter-finals against Chelsea.

The chaos at the Bernabeu continued in the first five minutes of extra-time, as Real Madrid were awarded a penalty after Ruben Dias upended Karim Benzema in the box.

Benzema stepped up and converted from the spot with authority to put his side ahead in the tie for the very first time.

There really is nothing like Champions League football, is there? It’s sporting theatre of the highest order and just seems to be getting better.

Benzema’s extra-time penalty was enough to book Real Madrid’s place in the 2021/22 final, where they will play Jurgen Klopp’s quadruple-chasing Liverpool side.

It’s going to be an epic battle in Paris on May 28.
