Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez would bring much more to this current Arsenal team than Alexandre Lacazette, claims journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The north London club are currently being linked with the Argentine, and O'Rourke thinks he would be a significant upgrade on the man he could be about to replace.

What is the latest news involving Martinez?

As per The Times, Arsenal are keen on signing Martinez this summer ahead of a potential return to the Champions League.

North London rivals Tottenham, however, are also thought to have an interest in the 24-year-old, who could cost up to £70m.

Signing a new striker in the upcoming transfer window is likely to be a priority for the Gunners, with Mikel Arteta set to lose both Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah.

Both players are out of contract in June, so Arteta will no doubt be desperate to see the arrival of someone like Martinez before the 2022/23 season commences.

What has O'Rourke said about Martinez?

In Martinez, O'Rourke is confident that Arsenal would be getting a forward who can bring more to the team than Lacazette.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the transfer insider said: "If you're comparing him to Lacazette, he's probably more prolific than Lacazette, better goalscoring record as well. Martinez, I think, could maybe lead the line on his own if Arsenal did decide to play that way.

"He's got probably more pace, more movement than Lacazette has right now, obviously in the latter stages of his career, while Lautaro Martinez is coming to the peak of his career."

Should Arsenal sign Martinez this summer?

If they can, absolutely. As O'Rourke touched on, his goal record is better than Lacazette's and has been impressive overall over the last few seasons.

Since the start of the last campaign, the Argentina international has scored over 30 league goals to help take Inter to the top of Italian football again.

In general, he is probably one of the best forwards in the world right now, with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp saying as much before his side took on the Nerazzurri in this season's Champions League.

"[Alexis] Sanchez and [Edin] Dzeko we know well – and Lautaro Martinez is one of the most exciting strikers in the world, probably," the Reds boss said back in December.

Ultimately, with Lacazette, who has scored just four times in the Premier League this term, likely to leave the Emirates in the summer, Arsenal need to bring in a new No.9. Martinez is probably the dream, but any move could hinge on the Gunners qualifying for Europe's elite competition.
