Miami GP: Juan Pablo Montoya talks up big potential wet weather impact on race
Former Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya has said that the potential for a heavy rain shower during the Miami Grand Prix could really change the dynamic of the race.
The F1 circus is in Miami this weekend for the first time in what looks a really glitzy and glamourous event as the sport continues to make a splash across the pond.
What could make an even bigger splash, though, is the wet weather tyres the cars may have to wear with Montoya saying if there is rain it will be a short, but heavy, deluge on the circuit.
“I would assume that the Miami track is going to be really smooth, being a new track. It will be interesting to see what pavement they are using,” he said to Vegas Insider.
“One of the things that could be a struggle is the weather. You don’t get a lot of rain, but you get really heavy showers for five minutes. It’s not just a light drizzle, it’s full wet floor and full humidity. In a lot of places, you can see the front coming. Not here. It’s just pop, gets everything wet and goes away.
“The weather could be a massive twist for the race. Might miss the track. Might get part of the track wet. That’s going to be quite interesting. They will have spotters and radars and everything to let the teams know where the rain is coming from, but it’s very hard to predict.”
