Arsenal will pull off a 'huge coup' if they succeed in persuading Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez to head to the Emirates Stadium during the summer, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The Gunners remain in pole position to secure Champions League football for next season, thanks to them being fourth in the Premier League standings, but it seems boss Mikel Arteta has already set his sights on potential reinforcements to his squad.

What's the latest news involving Martinez?

According to The Times, Arsenal have renewed their interest in Inter frontman Martinez after Arteta has revealed plans to welcome two new strikers to the Emirates Stadium.

The report suggests the 37-cap Argentina international is keen to join a club in the Champions League, meaning how the Gunners finish the season could prove crucial in their pursuit.

Inter are understood to be strapped for cash and willing to sell Martinez if a bid worth up to £70million is tabled in the summer.

It comes just a matter of months after the 24-year-old committed his long-term future to his Italian employers by penning a new five-year contract at the San Siro.

While Martinez's representative Alejandro Camano has told Radio Colonia, via Goal, that the striker is happy at Inter, Tottenham Hotspur are also interested.

What has Pete O'Rourke said about Martinez?

O'Rourke believes Arteta would show that Arsenal mean business by luring Martinez to the Emirates Stadium.

The journalist feels he would be a shrewd signing, particularly with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah's respective contracts coming to an end at the season's climax.

O'Rourke told GIVEMESPORT: "I think it would be a huge coup if they could get someone like Lautaro Martinez.

"He is somebody that's been on their radar for the last year or so and they have been keeping tabs on him in the last couple of transfer windows, but Inter Milan have managed to keep hold of him.

"He is a really deadly finisher. He's got 21 goals this season for Inter Milan and also did quite well in the Champions League, where he scored against Liverpool at Anfield with a stunning goal.

"He would be a huge signing for Arsenal if they could get somebody of his calibre to come into that team because they definitely need strikers in the summer, with the likes of Lacazette and Nketiah expected to move on when their contracts expire."

Why is Martinez of interest to Arsenal?

With Lacazette and Nketiah seemingly on their way out of the exit door, Arsenal will go into next season without a single frontman on their books unless they dip into the transfer market.

Inter have gone into the final stages of the campaign challenging for the Serie A title and a key reason for their hopes still being alive is the form of Martinez, with him racking up 21 goals over the course of the season heading into the weekend.

Martinez has also gained praise from Argentina team-mate Lionel Messi, with him being described as 'complete'.
