Rangers: Van Bronckhorst could start 130-goal star vs Leipzig

It is ‘going to be interesting’ to see if Rangers manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst ‘chucks’ Kemar Roofe into his starting lineup tonight, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The 29-year-old could be selected to lead the line in the second-leg of the Gers’ Europa League semi-final clash against RB Leipzig at Ibrox this evening following a recent injury setback.

What is the latest news involving Rangers?

Roofe has played no part in Rangers’ last three fixtures in all competitions after picking up a knock, missing the first-leg of their European clash at the Red Bull Arena.

However, Van Bronckhorst revealed in yesterday’s pre-match press conference that he’s going to ‘wait as long as possible’ for the striker to prove his fitness.

“Of course, I will wait as long as possible, but the most important thing for me is that they are physically able to play a part in tomorrow’s game, that is always the deciding factor,” said the Dutch tactician.

“We still have one day to prepare. Today will be an important day for both. I cannot tell you if they are in the squad for tomorrow or not.”

And with first-choice frontman Alfredo Morelos ruled out for the rest of the season with a thigh problem, Rangers will surely be hoping that Roofe can recover in time for the visit of Leipzig.

What has O’Rourke said about Roofe?

O’Rourke believes it will be intriguing to see whether Van Bronckhorst decides to risk Roofe, who has 130 career goals to his name, from the off or not after losing ‘talisman’ Morelos.

He told GiveMeSport: “It’s going to be interesting to see what Van Bronckhorst does end up doing with the team selection. Obviously, his options have been hit by injuries just at the wrong time with Morelos out injured.

“He’s been Rangers’ talisman in Europe over the last couple of seasons as well. Kemar Roofe is also injured, but it’ll be interesting to see if he maybe chucks him back into this game against Leipzig.”

Who else could Van Bronckhorst start?

In the first-leg, Van Bronckhorst opted to play without a recognised striker, instead choosing to field Joe Aribo as a false nine with Ryan Kent and Scott Wright cutting inside from wide positions.

Ally McCoist is Rangers’ club record goal scorer, but when did he leave the club as a player?

Fashion Sakala replaced Wright around the 70-minute mark, though, and provided a more traditional threat, but neither approach forced a breakthrough as Rangers fell to a 1-0 defeat.

It remains to be seen how Van Bronckhorst lines up for this intriguing encounter, yet he’ll surely be hoping Roofe is able to feature from the off.
